The Abbott Big Ten Blood Drive is approaching its end on December 5, and two schools remain in a tight race that looks like it will go down to the wire: the University of Wisconsin and the University of Nebraska. As of now, Wisconsin has a lead of less than 100 donors, while Nebraska aims to close the gap within the next three weeks.

In an article featured in The Daily Nebraskan, Andi Jackson, Nebraska volleyball middle blocker, was interviewed at a Nebraska Community Blood Bank (NCBB) mobile drive. Andi discusses the competitive spirit at the University of Nebraska and her confidence in the University’s support system to show up and push for a victory.

The goal of the challenge is not just to earn bragging rights but also to save lives. The challenge could not come at a better time, as the state of Nebraska is dealing with a critically low two- to three-day blood supply level. “We would like to be at a week’s supply. That, to us, is stable,” said Kari Lundeen, Manager, Donor Recruitment, NCBB in the article. “The patients in our hospitals, their need doesn’t go down, so we need more donors.” Kari said she hopes Jackson’s partnership with NCBB will be the push that encourages more first-time donors to take action and donate.
