Nebraska Community Blood Bank Calls for Donors to Support Hurricane Dorian Relief
Lincoln, NE – With Hurricane Dorian approaching landfall and forcing evacuations along the east coast, blood donors are missing their scheduled appointments and mobile drives are being cancelled. Nebraska Community Blood Bank has already shipped units to blood centers in areas along the path of the storm and is urging all eligible blood donors to schedule blood and platelet donations to help support relief efforts.
Blood supplies were already dangerously low following a drop in donations over Labor Day weekend, and in emergency situations, local blood supplies often reach critical lows and blood centers across the country are relied upon to help fill in the gaps. A continuous blood supply is vital to ensure all areas, hospitals, and patients impacted by the hurricane have access to the blood they need.
Donated blood is perishable and there is no synthetic replacement – in other words, there is no substitute for blood from a volunteer donor. In order to maintain a safe blood supply, the inventory of all blood types must be continually replenished.
