Nebraska Community Blood Bank (NCBB) announced today that the Lincoln Police Department (LPD) edged out Lincoln Fire and Rescue (LFR) to win the Battle of the Badges. This year’s contest was the closest yet, with the winner decided by just three votes.

During a trophy ceremony held this morning in Antelope Park, the Battle of the Badges traveling trophy was presented to LPD Chief Jeff Bliemeister, while LFR Chief Micheal Despain and his team helped clean up a picnic shelter alongside Lincoln Parks & Recreation.

Our first responders see the life-saving impact of donated blood far too often, whether they are responding to a fire, an accident, or other trauma situation. While LPD may have won the contest, the real winners are the patients in local hospitals who may have had their lives saved by blood that was donated during the competition.

Even though the competition is over, the need for blood is constant. NCBB needs more than 1,000 blood donors to step up each week to ensure it can provide local hospitals with the blood that patients depend on.

Nearly 100% of the blood donated to NCBB is transfused to patients in Nebraska hospitals. New and returning donors of all blood types are urgently needed to help maintain a steady blood supply.
