LGBTQ+ Blood Donor Eligibility Guidelines

The current U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) eligibility guidelines were updated from a one-year deferral to a deferral of three months for men who have had sex with men (MSM) in April 2020. This was a positive step to reduce deferral periods and welcome more donors to help save lives.

The good news is that more change is coming. As of early 2023, the FDA issued draft guidance to allow gender neutral and individualized assessment approach. When the FDA issues final guidance, blood centers will update their software and train staff to utilize the new assessment. It is likely that the new guidelines will be rolled out at blood centers across America in late 2023 or early 2024.

How can I help if I can’t donate blood?
