Successful Donation Tips

Before You Donate. . .

  • In the days and weeks prior to donating, eat healthy, iron-rich foods such as beef, fish, poultry, nuts, green vegetables, whole wheat products and raisins. This will help maintain your iron level.
  • At least three hours before donating, make sure to eat a balanced meal and avoid fatty foods.
  • Get a good night’s sleep.
  • Drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluids. Limit caffeinated beverages.
  • Upon arrival at NCBB, look for bottled water in the registration area to drink prior to your donation. Studies have shown drinking water 30 minutes before donating is beneficial.

During Donation. . .

  • During blood donation some people may feel light-headed or dizzy. One way to help prevent this is to use Applied Muscle Tension (AMT).  AMT consists of dividing your body by major muscle groups and releasing/relaxing the muscles while counting to five.

After Donating. . .

  • While still in the donation chair, dangle your feet over the side of the chair. Sit for a moment prior to standing and walking to the Donor Café.
  • Avoid smoking for at least one hour.
  • Enjoy a snack and juice or water in the Donor Café.  Please relax at least 15 minutes.
  • Drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluids in the next 24-48 hours.
  • You may resume all normal physical activities 30 minutes after donating blood.
  • Avoid strenuous physical activity or heavy lifting for at least 24 hours.
  • Enjoy your day and know you have made a difference in our community!

Good Things to Know. . .

  • Your body will replenish plasma within 24 hours and red blood cells within a few weeks.
  • Avoid alcoholic beverages for at least 24 hours.
  • Keep your arm bandaged for at least four hours.
  • If you have any bleeding, apply firm pressure to the site and raise your arm for 5-10 minutes.
