Laura & Mark - Advocate & Recipient

Sometimes it’s hard to grasp the life-changing effects of blood donation until the life affected is your own.

Laura’s husband, Mark, had always been an advocate for blood donation. Growing up his mother was a nurse, which made it easy for him to hear about the benefits of giving blood. Since 1999, Mark had been a regular blood donor in the community.

Unfortunately in February 2010, Mark found out that he would soon be the one in need. After exhibiting stomach problems earlier in the year, he was diagnosed with lymphoma.  This type of cancer affects the lymph system, a part of the body that enables it to fight off infection and produce white blood cells.  Because his body’s ability to produce blood had been compromised, receiving blood products was a very significant part in helping Mark withstand various treatments and stay strong.

Mark endured multiple chemotherapy treatments as well as a bone marrow transplant, but lost his battle in June of 2011. Over the course of his 16 month battle, he received plasma, platelets, and whole blood.

Laura has the deepest gratitude to every staff person who worked with her and Mark through their journey, as well as anyone who has ever donated blood products. Its blood donors that gave the couple a little more of what cancer took away; time.

“He was my best friend, and because of him, I will forever be an advocate of blood donation as I am a first-hand witness to its life-changing effects,” Laura explained.  “I really hope the one positive thing that comes out of his story is that it motivates someone to take the time to donate. Such a small action that can have such a huge impact, so why NOT be the type that gives?”
